How it Works

The Split String enrichment allows you to define segments based on a percentage distribution. The names of the segments can be derived from another string attribute or from a custom value. This enrichment is helpful in running A/B tests or targeting a fractional segment of users.

For additional information about the string attribute, see: Attribute Date Type: String.

Usage Example: Test Campaign

The following sections use an example scenario to describe how to set up a test campaign using the split string enrichment to define audience segments based on a distribution percentage. This usage example, called Test Campaign, uses the Split String enrichment to test the effects of a campaign on a small segment of customers before releasing it to the main segment visitors. By segmenting visitors into a 75/25% split, you can create an audience that contains only the test group (25%) and include them in the campaign.

Create the Split String Attribute

Use the following steps to create the Split String attribute:

  1. In the left sidebar, go to AudienceStream > Visitor/Visit Attributes.
  2. Click + Add Attribute in the upper right.
    The Add Attribute dialog displays.
  3. Under Choose a Scope, click Visitor and then click Continue.
  4. Under Data Types, click the String radio button and the click Continue.
  5. Under Title, enter Test Split.
  6. (Optional) In the Notes field, enter descriptive notes about this attribute.
  7. Click Add Enrichment and select Split String from the drop-down list.
The Split String enrichment dialog displays.
  8. In Set string's value to, click Custom from the drop-down list and name value Main Audience.
  9. Enter 75 for 75% of string population.
  10. Click plus (+) to add another segment.
  11. For this segment, select Custom from the drop-down list and name value Action Test.
  12. Enter 25 for 25% of string population.

Create the Test Audience

Use the following steps to set up an audience that only contains visitors in the test group:

  1. In the left sidebar, go to AudienceStream > Audiences.
  2. Add an audience named Cart Abandoners.
  3. Add the following conditions for the test audience:
    • The Cart Abandoner attribute is assigned.
    • The email for the visitor is captured.
    • The Test Split attribute is set to Action Audience.WhiteUI_AudienceStream_Add Cart Abandoner Audience.jpg
  4. Click Save.
  5. Save and publish the new audience.

Create a Connector Action

To test your campaign, you now have a test audience that contains 25% of your customers and are also cart abandoners.

Use the following steps to create a connector action:

  1. In the left sidebar, go to AudienceStream > Audience Connectors.
  2. Add a vendor connector of your choice and then add the desired action.
  3. When configuring the action, select your test segment audience, Action Test, as the source of data.
  4. Click Save.
  5. Save and publish your changes.
