New vs. Returning Visitor detection

Hi

I am looking for best practices to identify returning visitors with Tealium. Most tools have this functionality built-in of course, but I am looking for a tool independent way. The simplest solution would probably be to set a cookie containing date and time when a user visits the site for the first time.

However, there might be an existing implementation scenario that someone could share?

Many thanks

Tealium Employee

We have a cookie call _sn as part of the utag_main namespace that has this information.

  • Log in to Tealium iQ
  • Go to the Data Sources tab
  • Click the ARROW to the right of the green "+Add Data Sources" button
  • Select "Add Common Data Sources"
  • Under "Standard Bundles" select "Tealium Built-In Data"
  • Then click the green "Import This Bundle" button
  • This will add utag_main__sn to your data sources and will provide the number of sessions for this unique visitor
  • Be sure to Save your profile

Is this what you are looking for, @jmbolfing?

Hi @dan_george

That's fantastic! Was not aware this already existed. Great stuff. :-)

Thanks very much!
