This article explains how to request Tealium be whitelisted within the Google system for their DoubleClick products and how to configure the connector within AudienceStream.

Request DMP Whitelist

Only a Google DoubleClick Advertising/Publishing account that has been whitelisted can configure connector actions within AudienceStream. Google has a strict process for requesting a whitelist entry, so these steps should be followed precisely.

When requesting whitelist access for Tealium to create segments within supported Google products, contact your DoubleClick technical account managers for this request - NOT AdWords support. Find your Customer/Account ID and then follow the below instructions.

Be sure to CC asintegrations@tealium.com and your account manager on all emails to Google.

 List of products that require whitelist:

  • For DoubleClick for Publishers, Premium (DoubleClick for Publishers Small Business is not currently supported), contact your DFP technical account manager or dfp-support@google.com.
  • For DoubleClick Bid Manager (advertiser or partner), contact your DBM technical account manager or bidmanager-support@google.com.
  • For DoubleClick Ad Exchange, contact their AdX technical account manager or adxbuyersupport@google.com.
  • For Google AdWords, contact your Adwords technical account manager (TAM) and ddpsupport@google.com.
    • If you do not have a TAM, reach out to ddpsupport@google.com, or visit https://support.google.com/adwords/answer/1385067 and choose your country, then call the AdWords support number listed.

      You should only need to utilize DDP support to get connected to their Google account manager if you don't know who that is. DDP Support does not submit the form; they are a help center to assist with DDP-related questions.

    • After determining your Google Account Manager, send the standardized email below, plus additional information.

Whitelist Request Email Template

All requests made to Google need to state verbatim (including the subject):

Subject: REQUEST FOR DMP WHITELIST: Tealium AudienceStream (DDP connection)

Body: On behalf of my company, I agree to authorize Google to allow Tealium to create and edit audience data in my [insert product] account(s) [Account ID], subject to the relevant terms which govern the account(s). I acknowledge that any use of audience data in my AdWords account(s) is subject to the Google AdWords policies, including the Policy for advertisements based on interests and location. I also acknowledge that I read and understood the changes, and authorize Google to act on your behalf in making any Approved Adjustments.

Consistent with your agreement to the Google Advertising Terms and Conditions, we'd like your permission to make the following types of modifications ("Approved Adjustments") to your campaign(s):

1. Campaign changes: Includes the ability to edit targeting settings, add or edit ad groups, and edit campaign distribution.

2. Placement changes: Includes the ability to add and delete placements, pause and resume targeted placements, add or delete negative sites and categories, and edit placement-level bids.

3. Ad text changes: Includes the ability to add, edit, and delete text and display ads*, edit destination URLs (landing pages), add or delete tracking URLs to ad text and placements, and pause/resume ad text.

4. Keyword changes: Includes the ability to add and delete keywords, and increase or decrease the maximum cost per click.

5. Performance Monitoring: Includes the ability to track the overall performance of your campaign(s).

If you have agreed to any campaign specific changes Google will notify you of any Approved Adjustments after they've been made. You will have the opportunity to change or cancel such adjustments after they're posted live. If you disagree with any of the Approved Adjustments, please make sure to change and cancel them as soon as possible.

* You hereby acknowledge that the images used in your display ads have been procured by you and that any logos used are also available on your website. You represent and warrant you own valid subsisting rights (including the right to sub-license) in the images and grant Google a perpetual, Global, and royalty free right to make copies, reproduce, publicly display, make derivative works of, incorporate with other text and design elements, and in any other manner use the image for the purpose of creating the display ad for you, and to display such display ad on Google Sites through Google Services.

In addition, you must include the three questions along with answers to help the Google Account Manager understand the various use cases and client demand: 

1. What type of data does the advertiser wish to access?
(First-party data = Data owned by the advertiser or Third-party data = Data owned by a data provider. This whitelist does not enable access to pure 3rd party data segments).

2. What is the source of the data that the advertiser intends to use?
(Advertiser's offline customer data, advertiser's online customer database, data provided by a third-party company) 

3. What do the users included in the segments have in common?
(i.e. Please describe the segments that the advertiser wishes to access.)

Once Google receives the agreement, the account will typically be whitelisted within 7 business days.


Connector Configuration

  1. Navigate to Act > Connectors.
  2. Click +Add Connector.
  3. Find the desired DoubleClick product and add the connector.
  4. Agree to Google's Terms and Conditions.
  5. Enter a Title.
  6. Enter the Client/Account Customer ID (without spaces) that is representative of the Target Product.

No other requirements are needed at this point. Since Tealium is whitelisted for the account, when a Segment is created or an Action is configured the appropriate authentication will occur on Google's end to ensure that Tealium can access the supplied Client/Account Customer ID.

Test the Connection

To ensure the connection to DoubleClick works, you must attempt to configure an action. You can verify it works even if no configurations or campaigns have been created in DoubleClick.

To verify your connection:

  1. From the chosen DoubleClick connector, click to the Actions tab.
  2. From the Actions drop-down, select "Add Visitor to User-List or Segment" and click +Create Action.
    Tealium will make a call to DoubleClick to query for available segments.

If the connection was successful, no error will appear in the UI. If any segments were pre-configured, they will appear in the "Select the Target User-list/Segment" dropdown in the Action configurations.

If the connection failed, an error message appears and further follow-up is required with your contact at Google using the following steps.

To investigate a connection error:

  1. Open the your browser's developer tools.
  2. View the Network activity and clear the logs.
  3. Back in AudienceStream, test the connection again by clicking +Create Action.
  4. In the Network console, filter the logs for an entry matching "google/ddp/dmp/segment". This is the request from Tealium to Google.Connection Error
  5. Click the URL and view the Response.Connection Response
  6. Pass this information back to the whitelist email from DoubleClick that includes asintegrations@tealium.com and this will be investigated.
