How It Works

Audience Sizing allows you to discover and take action on visitors based on their behavior. After specifying a date range and rule conditions as input, your audience data is searched for visitor profiles that match the criteria you selected. When complete, the results display in an interactive Venn diagram showing the number of visitors discovered for each rule condition.

Daily Visitor Query Cap

Visitors are sampled by capping the daily visitor count, which determines the sample size of visitors used to project results in Audience Sizing and Audience Discovery queries. The actual query runs on the total visitors matched, not just the capped visitors. Likewise, jobs also run on the total number of matched visitors, not just the sampled visitors.

The Sample Size of Daily Visitors to Process profile setting can only be modified by Tealium staff. To adjust this setting, contact your account representative.

The default cap is 100,000. That means if your total visitor population is 1,000,000, the projections are performed on a random sample of a 100,000 visitors.


Overlapping conditions in the Venn diagram are called segments and represent combinations of rule conditions.

  • Segments can be selected for one-time use with a connector action. You cannot save a segment for later use.
  • Use your mouse to hover over segments and view the total number of visitors found.
  • To target a segment with a connector action, check the box next to it and click Next.


The process of sending an audience segment to a connector is called a job and takes place once you identify your audience segment. You may assign a job to one or more segments at a time.

  • A job remains inactive until you manually link it to a connector and activate it.
  • Once a job is activated, it will only run once.
  • You cannot pause or restart a job. This helps to prevent duplication of jobs, especially those that involve sending emails to visitors.
  • A completed job cannot be reused, but you may view its configurations or remove it from the jobs list.
  • To view existing job listings, go to AudienceStream > Connectors > Jobs.

Get Started

In order to search visitors and create jobs based on your results, you must first specify a date range and at least one rule. The rules are the same as the rules used in visitor enrichments and audience creation.

Due to the nature of the historic data being queried, only rules containing visitor-level attributes are permitted.

Discover Visitors

Use the following steps to set a date range and select the rule conditions for your job:

  1. In the sidebar, go to AudienceStream > Discover.
  2. Click Audience Sizing tab.
  3. Under Historical Date Range, use the calendar tool to select the start and end date for your date range.
    The system only finds (discovers) visitors with activity between the dates chosen. Visitors that have not had activity within the specified date range or that were purged due to the profile retention time are not searched.
  4. Under Choose Rules, use the drop-down lists to select up to three (3) rules.

    The date range specifies the time during which a visitor was active, whereas rule conditions are evaluated against the current visitor profile, not the profile at the time of activity.

    The query begins immediately upon selecting a rule and displays the number of visitors and percentage of total visitors processed until 100% is reached.
  5. (Optional) To remove one or more rules from your query, click the X next to the visitor count.
  6. Your results display as an interactive, color-coded Venn diagram with each circle representing one of the rules selected.

Create a Job

Once you have identified a date range and the rules, use the following steps as an example of how to select a segment and create a job.

  1. Under Choose at least one rule to select audience segments, click Next.
  2. Under Select Segments, check one or more segments.
    You must select at least one segment to proceed.
  3. Click Set up job.

    The Create Job dialog displays, including a summary or the segments you selected. You can assign a connector and action after the job is created.
  4. Under What would you like to name your job?, enter a unique name, such as "Retarget Jeans Buyers Post Holidays".
    This name will be used to identify the job when configuring it in a connector action.
  5. Under What time range do you want to target when the job runs?, use the calendar drop-down to select the date range you want to target.

  6. Click Save.
    The job is successfully created.

Link the Job to a Connector

Now that the job is created, use the following steps to link it to a connector action:

  1. Click Go To Job to assign the connector action.

  2. In the jobs listing, select your job name.

    At this point, the job is inactive as it is not yet linked to a connector action.
  3. Navigate to your desired connector or go to the connector marketplace to select a new connector.
  4. Add and configure the retargeting vendor selected.
  5. Complete the fields in the Configure tab.
  6. In the Actions tab, create a "Send Email to user" action (or other retargeting action).
  7. From the Source menu, select your job name from the drop-down list.
  8. Complete the set up of the connector action and save.
  9. Go back to Audience Sizing and follow the steps to activate your job. 

Activate Your Job

Now that the job has been linked to a connector, use the following steps to activate it:

  1. In the sidebar, go to AudienceStream > Audience Connectors.
  2. Click the Jobs tab.
  3. Click your job to open it.
  4. Click Start.
  5. Save/Publish your profile.

    The job will not start unless the Save/Publish step is successful.

Example Scenarios

This section provides customer targeting examples to help you get started.

Example: Retarget Past Purchasers

In this example, you want to retarget customers who have visited your site in the last week, have not purchased in the last 30 days, have purchased more than $500 in their lifetime, and have a favorite product category of "Jeans".

This example assumes the necessary date selections and rules to identify visitors with a customer's favorite product category, lifetime order value, and days since last purchase.

  1. In the sidebar, go to AudienceStream > Discover.
  2. Click the Audience Sizing tab.
  3. Select a date range that represents the last 7 days.
  4. Select or create the following rules:
    • Rule 1: (string) "Favorite Product Category (favorite)" equals "Jeans"
    • Rule 2: (number) "Lifetime Order Value" >= 500
    • Rule 3: (number) "Days since last purchase" > 30

Example: Retarget Holiday Coupon Shoppers

In this example, you want to retarget customers who visited your site during the December holiday season, are currently a VIP Customer, engage most with email, and frequently use coupons.

This example assumes the necessary date selections and rules required to identify visitors identified as VIP Customers, engages most with email, and frequently uses coupons.

  1. In the sidebar, go to AudienceStream > Discover.
  2. Click the Audience Sizing tab.
  3. Select a date range that represents the December holiday season (for example, December 1 - December 31.
  4. Select or create the following rules:
    • Rule 1: (badge) "VIP Customer" is assigned
    • Rule 2: (string) "Marketing Channel Engagement (favorite)" equals "email"
    • Rule 3: (number) "Coupon Usage Ratio" >= 0.50
