Verify Data Layer is a diagnostic tool that checks if your Data Layer is implemented properly. The goal is to verify that all the crucial pageview- and event-level variables that you want in your Data Layer are present and correctly populated.

Why is it important? Modifying the site's CMS or adding and removing elements in a Tealium iQ profile can leave behind gaps in your overall implementation. The Verify tool can fill in the gap by detecting what variables are missing or incorrectly formatted on the page.

Note: We designed the Verify tool to validate UDO-type Variables (formerly Data Sources) only. It will not detect any Variables of the type JavaScript, Query String, Cookies, and Meta Data.

Prerequisites

An automated Test: A Test is a step-by-step workflow that you can record by mimicking page views, clicks, or mouse-overs in the order that it would take the visitor to complete the workflow. You need the Test Recorder utility (under Tealium Tools) to record the necessary actions. The utility requires the page_type and event_name variables to be present on the page. When the Test runs, the Verify tool reproduces all the steps and extracts the pageview– and event–level UDO variables for every view/event.

A Data Layer Spec: A Spec is a collection of pageview– and event–level variables that act as points of reference for the Verify tool. When the Test runs, Verify detects the variables for every step and compares them to the Spec. You can create a Spec during the recording or add them beforehand in Tealium iQ.

How Verify Data Layer works

When you run an automated Test in Tealium iQ,

1. The Verify tool carries out the recorded steps one by one. This may involve navigating to various pages, clicking on buttons, or hovering over drop-downs.

2. The pageview– and event–level variables for each step are collected.

3. When the Test is complete, the Verify tool compares the collected variables against the Spec.

4. The results are summarized into a Test Report and emailed to the profile user(s).
